A Banksy mural painted on the wall of the Royal Courts of Justice in central London has been reported to police as criminal damage. The artwork appeared on an external wall of the Queen's Building on Monday and has since been covered with large black plastic sheets and metal barriers.

The image depicts a protester lying on the ground holding a blood-spattered placard, whilst a judge in wig and gown looms over him wielding a gavel. The mural is expected to be removed on Tuesday because the building holds listed status and is therefore legally protected.

Police investigation launched

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. Officers received a report of criminal damage to the side of the Royal Courts of Justice on Monday September 8, with enquiries continuing.

The court service stated it is legally obliged to maintain the character of the building due to its listed status. This legal requirement means any unauthorised additions must be removed to preserve the building's protected heritage.

Artist confirms responsibility

Banksy confirmed he created the work through a post on Instagram, showing the graffiti before it was covered. The mysterious artist, whose identity remains the subject of constant speculation, simply captioned the pictures: "Royal Courts Of Justice. London."

Security measures and meaning

The artwork is being guarded by security officials outside the building and sits directly underneath a CCTV camera. Some observers have interpreted the mural as commentary on the arrest of hundreds of people for supporting Palestine Action by holding placards at protests.

Palestine Action was banned by the Government as a terrorist group in July after activists damaged RAF planes. The timing of the artwork has led to speculation about its connection to recent crackdowns on protest activities.
